We Wear Dark Clothes

Eric Mellinger’s distinctive technicolor works have been a staple in the Light Painting community since 2010. He is the New York representative and Advisory Board member of the Light Painting World Alliance and a receiver of the International Light Painting Award. His work has been exhibited in the United States, Europe, Asia, and South America.

In a one-night-only exhibition WEAR DARK CLOTHES: Light Painters, Mellinger is exhibiting floral, surreal, and psychedelic images in signature lush colorations Friday, March 18th, 2022, from 6 to 9 PM.

Eric Mellinger

Eric And I first met in Paris at UNESCO headquarters for an international light painting exhibition, during 2015. We chatted and afterwards, a few of us English speaking light painters went for a beer, Including Rob Turner from Australia and Dan Whitaker from England.

We quickly connected through a very special type of humor.

When I went to visit New York later that year, he invited me to come see him to hang out and light paint which we love to do.

He brought me to his studio, where we collaborated for hours in the dark. He had brought fresh flowers and big shiny metallic balls for the arrangement.

In 2018, I moved to New York. Another French light painter, Dee light had also recently moved to the city, so we all got together to celebrate my arrival with more light painting and Eric’s now infamous balls.

Today I’m honored to have Eric’s amazing work as part of the upcoming light painting exhibition.

Mehdi Irhzal, French-Moroccan light calligrapher is known for his fluid and graceful approach. Originally from Paris, he participated in the budding light community as early as 2012, and has since been featured in international exhibitions. At light painting meetups, he gained recognition while demonstrating handmade light calligraphy tools .

In a one-night-only exhibition WEAR DARK CLOTHES: Light Painters, Irhzal is exhibiting light calligraphy of the New York landscape on Friday, March 18th, 2022, from 6 to 9 PM.

Deelight

Even though Mehdi Irhzal, aka Deelight, and I knew about each other in France, we officially met in New York. Having left France with all my fellow light painters in the French Light Painting League, was a scary jump. Knowing Deelight was in NYC and that we could go out light painting together was such a relief. We met with Eric a few times, once on the highline.

We made it a regular thing going out to different spots in the city, running around with lights in the dark, having a blast! Often taking each other as models/figures.

Dee has been so supportive of my Light Painting New York initiative, that we decided to produce a series of online tutorials together in English.

We are delighted to present Mehdi Irhzal’s light calligraphy.

Eva Meuller is a Bavarian multimedia artist who has gained recognition in NYC since the 1990s. Mueller’s edgy approach is well known for her iconic minimal compositions. Her body of fine art, conceptual photography, and video work encompass fashion, gender, and race politics. Soon, she will be heading to Florence, Italy as an artist in residency to focus on light painting.

In a one-night-only exhibition WEAR DARK CLOTHES: Light Painters, Mueller is exhibiting abstract light paintings, each created in a single gesture on Friday, March 18th, 2022, from 6 to 9 PM.

Eva Mueller

During Bushwick Open Studios 2019, I met Eva and discovered her work. I remember thinking, “Ah, finally a really good NY photographer that stands out from the lot.”

When she acquired one of my small works, I was enthralled. Soon we realized we were neighbors in Bushwick and started collaborating or posing for each others projects.

During the pandemic, she came one cold night to be the figure in my rooftop dunes. Soon after, I participated in an online portrait pandemic project Eva created.

We have also become friends, supporting each other in our artistic endeavors.

One of our peak shoots resulted in a freakish image, shocking the light painting community, by its originality. It’s a one shot composition weaving Eva and one of her iconic prints together.

“Most of my work is people-based but sometimes I paint and meditate with my camera and the outcomes are dreamy abstract images. ” – Eva Mueller

A preview of the NYC4D series that I will be showing at the one-night-only exhibition WEAR DARK CLOTHES: LIGHT PAINTERS @ The Thames Art Center, Friday, March 18th, 2022 from 6 to 9 PM: These long-exposure, multi-dimensional deconstructions of New York’s landscapes began with the idea of the fourth dimension during my fourth year in New York. The camera rotations are similar to a clock, mimicking time. As I spin my camera, New York City monuments are deconstructed and reconstructed into new constructs. Each shoot becomes exciting as the time is limited during the sky’s dusk or dawn, only thirty minutes of orange and blue light.
