Light Painting New York Experiences

About the Host – Chanette (aka Cha)

Currently I live in New York, my paradise for exploring places with my lights. In1992 Paris, I was selected by The French National Center of Photography to initiate street light silhouettes outside and the following year, light portraits inside Paris’ Palais de Tokyo. Before 2000, I did participatory light painting for Nevada’s Burning Man. A long pioneering journey between San Francisco and France, led me to recently co-founding the non-profit French Light Painting League (LFLP). I love engaging people in the magic of this relatively unknown art form.

What we’ll do

The digital image you will take home will capture the light trace of your gestures, rather than a face in front of a place, Imagine in an iconic New York nightscape, ribbons of colored light you created with flashlights.

The digital image you will take home will capture the light traces and energy of your gestures, rather than a still face in front of a place, Imagine in an iconic New York nightscape ribbons of colored light you created with flashlights.

What makes it such fun, is you can simultaneously follow the results of your motions on a nearby tablet screen. Instantly you will be in awe at the surprising photograph developing before your eyes. As night falls, together you will step in front of the camera to draw out, with a provided light source in hand, the proposed composition. Individuals will be guided through the process as we continue towards a final image.

Light painting is a long exposure photograph done in the dark on a tripod in one shot. My 27 years of practice offer a seasoned and in-depth vocabulary of skills to help you easily to explore your light moves. When light painting as a group, each person’s action is vital to a harmonious outcome.

My 28 years of practice offer a seasoned and in-depth vocabulary of skills to help you easily explore your light moves. As we light paint together in a group, each person’s action is vital to a harmonious outcome. At the end of our light painting experience, you will be able to share with friends and family a light painting from your phone or email.

One of my mottos, is ‘light units’.

Where we’ll be : Dumbo (short for Down Under the Manhattan Bridge Overpass) offers stunning night views of New York City, the Brooklyn Bridge and the Manhattan Bridge. It’s a nice get-away off the beaten track with its parks, benches and walk-ways hugging the shoreline. During holidays and weekends, many New Yorkers enjoy exploring Dumbo. I love to light paint in this area and imagine you will too with all the twinkling city’s lights adding to our canvas.
